* Craigslist Job Scams

Craigslist is being swamped with tons of fake employment ads offering unusually high pay. Most of these ads are posted by someone with a gmail, gmx, live, in or even yahoo addresses, but now they get smarter by just using craigslist auto response addresses. The jobs sound very generic, usually Receptionist, Administrative Assistants. By responding you will notice you get almost an instant response where they prompt you to fill out an application – DO NOT DO THIS – IT IS BOGUS. I am unsure of what the scam is and how they profit, I can only imagine they fish for information, hence you email gets clogged with spam. Legit job ads follow general pay scales and tend to elaborate about the company, with company website info, phone number, etc.

Still in the middle of being scammed what should I do. Answer a ad for a Family driver for 2 yrs. send my info which incluced a pic of my drivers licence. What should I do. This person is sending a check and iam to cash it and take my part and send the rest to someone else. Can you help. Tom

  2. Thomas Favre says:

Who should I report this too.

  3. ScamRadar says:

    Tom,

That follows the typical outline of a scam: they send you a check, you’re supposed to deposit it and then immediately send the rest of the funds (after taking out your percentage) to someone else. By the time it’s discovered that it’s a fake check, you would have already sent them “REAL” cash. You end up with the fake one, and could possibly get in trouble with the bank.

DO NOT deposit or cash the check. It’s a scam!!! It’s tempting to cash that check, but it’s not worth it. Keep a copy of all your correspondence, for proof if you need it later on.

Bottom line: DON’T CASH THE CHECK!

  4. GG says:

Publishing names/email addresses of recent Craig’s List jewelry scammers in case someone (smartly) Googles their names before commencing business with them:

    Barry Wood – [email protected]
    Heather Freret – [email protected]
    Teresa Perez – [email protected]
[email protected] – this is a bogus address: [email protected].

Most of these are part of the Nigerian Craig’s List jewelry scam. Don’t fall for the fake payment/shipment authorization emails “from PayPal”.

    Hope this all helps!

  5. Penny says:

Craigs list is definitely a scam. I applied for a job and got a quick “auto response” from human resources, telling me that because of bad experience in the past, by being required to use a company credit card, they first would need me to get a credit report and send them my credit score. I DID NOT. I have not received any calls from any jobs that I’ve applied for using craigs list, nor has anyone else that I know for that matter. BEWARE! This needs to be shut down ASAP!

  6. Eddie says:

My wife responded to an ad from a person looking for someone to do some light housecleaning and run errands for a few hours week at $20 an hour. The reply she got was that this person is moving to the States from Scotland on a business assignment and he has a wife that is 5 months pregnant . He wants to send her a check and have her deposit and take her salary for 2 weeks out of it then buy groceries and other household items with it.

[email protected]./Mike Reynolds is the name being associated with this scam. A Google search of the email shows that this person has posted the same on on Craigslist in several different US States.

My wife was naive to think that this was a legitimate job offer and responded . I explained to her that no legitimate employer, especially someone looking for a person to work inside of their home would just hire you over the internet without any type of interview or screening process.

Should we receive any checks from this person I will make sure to turn them over to the local authorities or even the FBI.

  7. Ashley says:

Beware of Jeff Lavallee, [email protected], Jacksonville, FL, he sells ipods, chis etc. He says he is local and then when you got to buy he has to ship and so you paypal. I checked to see if I was covered with paypal. From what I read it seemed like I was. Nope, only if he doesn’t ship it. Well he did and it was the wrong thing. So I sent it back and waited for an agreed upon refund. Never got it.

Stay away from paypal on craigslist. You are only fully covered if you use it via ebay.

  8. SR says:

Yes, I agree with GG, I got an email from this person:
HEATHER FRERET asking if I still had my expensive watch for sale on craiglist.

I have got many other emails from people asking me to ship things since theyre on vacation, and paying extra costs.. Want a good laugh?! Here goes:
    ———————————————————–

They think we’re dumb? lol…the extra spaces and punctuation gave it away before I came across this link.
OH, and the watch mentioned above…is a womans watch…..so this person actually wants to send a womans watch to her son!

  9. ScamRadar says:

    LOL (=

    Great observation there, Soniya!

  10. skamkilla says:

Craigslist is a great resource, but ONLY for local, face to face transactions. Scammers abuse craigslist because it’s free.

The red flags should fly if:
-they offer more than you ask for and want you to wire the balance to them
-they have NO local phone number or address
-they have a gmail, hotmail, live.com email address
-they inquire about “the item” or avoid being specific

Flag the bad ads, and report the more egregious ones to [email protected] .

  11. SR says:

To continue my story from the above post, I have been posting my ad for a high value jewelry piece, for a couple of weeks and I have been getting replies from various fake-sounding people (at that time I did not know about this scam), but the suspicious thing was that they never replied once I mentioned I preferred not to ship and was only interested in local buyers..any normal person wud reply n say..”aww too bad u could not sell it to me!…”

one woman claimed to be from North Daktoa, one was traveling for work, and still had the time to check craigslist listings and make an offer! He immediately wanted my address etc n other details, and said he would have his assistant do the needful.

The funny thing is that any normal person wud also want to try and negotiate a good price, and NOT pay more to assist with shipping charges! The next weird thing to look for is weird language, incorrect grammar and not being polite.

Initially I thought these were genuine people, but every time similar “usps, money order, traveling, out of town, surprise gift for someone” email replies would show up and this is when I started googling these people names.

One other person who I was unable to google was a strange email id: Judith [email protected]. I was very disturbed after these findings πŸ™
hope this pops up in peoples searches and they avoid being victims of these scams!

  12. david says:

I have been an honest user of craigslist for over a year. I now find it to be so riddled with scam artists that I want to withdraw from this enviornment.

  13. Lawrence says:

Just got a message from “Judith Pope”. And thanks to this thread and SR, I’m not responding to the message, but I’m reporting it. Here it is:

    Message:
    ——————————————————–
    from: [email protected]

    Hi,
Is your item listed still up for sale?
    Let me know.
    Thanks
    ——————————————————–

Riiight. I just posted up my “item” today, so why would a normal person need to ask? And why item? Is that the only question you have, seriously? Thanks again, SR.

  14. SR says:

I’m glad you googled this, Lawrence.
Wow [email protected] has progressed to [email protected] !!

If they were any smarter, they would use a newer, less suspicious sounding normal name! Yes, the phrase “still up for sale?” on the first day/withing hours of posting makes them sound like a novice and they probably feel it makes us feel good about the high demand for our items…yeah right…

  15. marvin says:

I got a response for a driver position a few weeks ago but somethings seems very awkward. I’m a student so i thought this would come in handy but I got a response that really wasn’t right, I have copied it. If you guys can help me out, it would be much appreciated. she already emailed me 2 times after this, here it is:

    Hello

How are you doing? I’m sorry for not getting in touch with you for a while. Been very busy with my business and travels.

I just want to inform you that my Business Associate has sent out the payment to you as discussed. And you should receive it today. Here is the UPS tracking number for the payment–j208 716 608 9

I’m currently in Malaysia now, im through with business here and i should arrive in the State as soon as possible, I will email you my flight intinery as soon as my agent books my flight.

So when you receive the payment today, please go ahead and cash the check at your bank and take out your first week pay which is $600. And afterwards send out the rest payment to my travel agent here in Malaysia through western union money transfer, so she can book my flight and i can email you my flight details.

Heres the details of the agent to send money through western union–

    LARRY AMARTHILA
    45 KLCC BUILDING
    AMPANG, KUALA LUMPUR
    MALAYSIA 55700

Dont send the whole amount at a time, send half of it

Email me the details of the transfer as soon as you get the money sent.

    Thank you very much.

Looking forward to seeing you soon. And i hope we have some great time when i arrive.

    John Lane.

  16. SR says:

    Hi Marvin
So this a guy or girl..its signed as John Lane…
This is deinfitely a scam!! The most obvious keywords are: busines travels, business associate, saying “out of State” instead of ‘The States) and the bad grammar: And i hope we have some great time when i arrive.

if a person is busy traveling they may not have the time to write such a huge email..and in italics! agent booking flight? I thought people already confirm return flights much in advance as they’re cheaper (more in the US than other countries)

So money and UPS tracking number?? These terms or whatever seem very fishy and complicated! “Dont send the whole amount”…

  17. Thomas Favre says:

This is a SCAM, don’t cash the check. Tom

  18. JD says:

Yeah, [email protected] is still using both lol, she/he sent me two e-mails for the same items from [email protected] and [email protected] It was weird how it was 2 different e-mails saying the same thing. I LMAO when i got this. anyway thanks for posting this for all of us morons that would have normally fell for this scammer. I am glad there are smart enough people to watch out for this kinda stuff. I had posted it like 5 minutes before this to and it was the exact same message that SR got. But yeah thanks guys and gals for posting.

  19. el diablo says:

[email protected] pulled the same thing on me, SR. Shes out of town at the moment, and wants to send my item to Nigeria to her step son graduating from school there. She bid $60 over the asking price, then wanted to use paypal and have me ship it. told her to send a money order, still waiting for a response.

  20. el diablo says:

P.S. they dont want you to send the whole amount Western Union because any transfer over $500 is taxed 2% plus the fee. I think this is a scam to get you to cash and transfer fraudulent checks.

  21. VC says:

I was so mad for a few hours and waw….just figured out that I’m just adding another story to stepmom Judith Pope. It was yesterday night when it all started.
“Is this item still available,” “I want it for my stepson as a graduation gift”… she was sending out regular routine copied emails showing interest in a WOMEN’s watch. duh~~ Even though she got sooo lazy, should have at least change STEPSON to STEPDAUGHTER..or read that it was a WOMEN’s watch. Even though it was a little suspicious, I was willing to sell the watch since I got ‘Pope’s
special handmade PAYPAL payment confirmation’ email really fast following our conversation. She asked me to ship via EXPRESS USPS to NIGERIA, as soon as the post office opened. So, I went to the post office today at 9AM just to find out that Nigeria doesn’t allow watch and jewelry shipping via express and priority with insurance covered only to max $67 in case of item lost. Came home sent Pope a polite letter explaining that I did not want to send the watch since it was too much of a risk and canceled the pending money request from paypal. These last two letters I got from Pope and ‘Pope’s handmade Paypal’ were what really pissed me off. THEN REFUND THE MONEY TO MY STEPSON IN NIGERIA VIA WESTERN UNION. “You have an Instant Payment of US $$$ from Judith Pope so you have to refund back the total sum of $$$ USD before your account can totaly be credited. ” Waw~~ I couldn’t believe that I got scammed so easily, gave out my paypal account without a doubt, and allowed myself wasting hours including going to the post office. JUDITH POPE… lol~ yeah~ I should have given it a second thought. What a name….

  22. Ralph says:

I still think craigslist is great, just BE CAREFUL. Especially now that there are people holding others up at gunpoint, …
I have two stories to relate from the last week: #1 is from the “Judith Pope” [email protected], asking if “my item” (Canon 1D Mark II cameras and lenses) was still available, which I immediately recognized as a scam. Later she offered to PayPal some weird amount of money πŸ™‚
I am toying with the notion of asking them to send a cashier’s check just to make them put forth the effort and expense. And then telling them I never got it and to send another…

#2 is somebody who was trying to scam me locally.

Same listing, Canon 1D Mark II digital SLR cameras, some L lenses and stuff, and the person asked how much for all of it. So, I added it all up, showed him the total and then gave him a nice discounted price. He replied that he would pay full price and would pay $500 more than the full price if I could do it within an hour or the next morning. This, of course, set off LOTS of alarm bells :). He later said that he was having car problems and wanted to see if I could meet him in Mountain View. I ended up telling him that I would meet him at the police station so we could do the deal there πŸ™‚

I figured he was trying to scam me either by holding me up at gunpoint/killing me, or by trying to pay with counterfeit cash or cashier’s check (even though I always insist on cash).

I still believe that craigslist is a great resource and I have had many excellent, easy and safe transactions.
Just use your brain and be careful. Ask friends for help and advice.
If it sounds too good to be true, it is a scam.
NEVER deal with somebody that isn’t local off of craigslist.
ALWAYS meet in a public place with lots of people around.
    ALWAYS use your brain.
It is ALWAYS a scam if it isn’t local.
It is ALWAYS a scam if it involves Western Union, Africa, European travel, …

  23. SR says:

I’m happy to see that more people are suspecting somethign and googling their names/email ids.
So my high value item is posted for sale on craigslist every week, and here are some more scammers who have emailed me (inspite of mentioning only local buyers-no shipoping/etransfer of any sort!)

    [email protected]
no name and just the email id, thats such a give-away! anyway s/he didnt reply after i reitereated: yes its available for hand-to-hand sale to local buyers only.
no moneygram, cashier checks, money orders, escrow, shipping

heres the email from this person (notice how they always say ‘item’ instead of the actual name of what is for sale, like camera, watch, jewelry…), and again its pre-planned and typical of scammer behavior:

Okay WHY IS CRAIGSLIST NOT STOPPING THIS???? It makes me soooooooo mad and irritated that there is a problem but nothing to prevent it. I need a higher paying job and yes- will look on there. I have gotten those ridiculous replies of getting higher education and entering your information. I am soooo frustrated – its like I might as well give up since the only higher paying jobs out there are commission only and that means no financial security and taking a huge paycut in the first year if you did that. I want craigslist to validate these ads- its their responsibility!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I applied for a job on craigslist in March. It said for internet warehouse assistant to vacancyline.net. They emailed me two weeks later telling me to apply on their website http://www.properplay.net/register and http://www.properplay.net/instructions.jpg. On the site it just ask for basic information such as name ,address, phone number and if you want to be mailed a paycheck or use paypal. It doesn’t ask for any paypal information. The email says I would receive game cards such as world of warcraft scan them and email them to my company rep. The pay is monthly at $15 per card. So far I have done about 10 cards then today I receive a shipment with two jackets and 3 hats. I don’t know now if this truly is a scam if so who do I report it to?

  40. I was just scammed two seconds ago but something told me to google this kids address:

    Oluwasola Comfort
    No 8 olusanya, Ring Road
    Lbadan, Oyo state, Nigeria 23402

and this website popped up. i am glad i didn’t send my psp anywhere… i thought it was kind of weird that he would pay $100 for shipping and another $220 for the game console. I am so thankful for google!!!! and to Donna for reporting it… thank you

  41. Wow I am so glad people are posting this information. Saved me from a big mistake!!! I am a first time user of craigslist and was trying to sell some jewelry. Got an exact replica of the email Justin posted on 4/11. THANKS JUSTIN!!!

Hi Casey,I want you to understand that the deal is been handled by
secretary as posted the payment promptly, but there was a little
problem which i guess we can handle with care while i contacted her to
confirm if the payment as been mail out, she said my boss issued a
single check of $3000 for your item and other items bought. The payment
was already posted before i was inform about this but i wouldn’t want
this to delay the sale. All you do once you have the payment is to
take it to your Bank and have it cashed and you will then deduct the
money for your item plus $100 for your running around. The excess fund
on the payment will then be wired to my mover via Western Union that
same days so that he can come for pick up as i already plan on using
the excess on the payment to offset the cost of the various shipments
he as undertaken on my behalf.Do let me know if i can trust you to
have the excess sent to my mover thank you.

    Best Regards.

SOME MORE EMAIL ADDRESSES: [email protected] AND [email protected] THIS GUY WANTED TO HIRE ME TO PICK UP HIS WIFE AT THE AIRPORT AND DRIVER HER AROUND FOR THE NEXT 3 WEEKS. HE SENT ME 3 MONEY ORDERS FOR $887 EACH. HE WANTED ME TO CASH THEM KEEP $500 AND WIRE THE REST TO DARREL JENSEN IN OKLAHOMA CITY, OK. (DARREL JENSEN IS A REAL PERSON, I LOOKED HIM UP IN THE WHITE PAGES ONLINE). I CALLED WESTERN UNION TO VERIFY THAT THE MONEY ORDERS WHERE LEGIT. ALL 3 WHERE CHECKS FOR VERY SMALL AMOUNTS AND WHERE CASHED SEVERAL MONTHS AGO. I AM TURNING OVER ALL CHECKS, COPIES OF THE EMAILS AND THE INFO I HAVE ON DARREL JENSEN TO THE LOCAL POLICE. I KNOW THIS WILL NOT STOP ALL THE SCAMS, BUT HOPEFULLY IT WILL PUT A FEW OF THESE DIRT BAGS IN JAIL.

I just received an e-amil from [email protected], similar to what others had posted. I agreed to sell the laptop and everything, before i sensed that something was wrong. I called paypal, and they said it was a scam. Thank god I looked into it before shipping the product out.

  46. Mark says:

Ok I have been hearing alot about this [email protected] so I sent an e-mail asking is she was still interseted in the item I had for sale on craigslist (I have nothing for sale on craigslist). and I actually got a response…LOL here is what she/he sent

Its okay.. Send me your paypa email address and full name on the account and let me know the total amount including shipping cost via Express Mail International (EMI) at the Post Office.
    Get back asap

As you can see they never asked what the item was or who I was or anything. This person needs to be stopped.
Please be careful out there in internet land, don’t be another victim to this or any other scam out there. If it sounds to good to be true or just too easy then it’s a scam.

[email protected] is not a scammer.. She bought things from me recently and paid all money in full and later came to pick up the package herself.
    Thanks to Her. Judith Pope

I think somebody is trying to impersonate the name skittyjuddy and Judith Pope.. She bought something and paid from myself and my husband.
    Thank you Judith

    Just to keep everyone informed:
The commenters, “James” and “Susan Casting” may be the same person. Their IP address is from the same location. In addition, look at their comments. James calls himself ‘Judith’ after his comment, and ‘Susan Casting” calls herself ‘Judith’ at the end of her comment. Ooopss!!!

I agree and the posts where made the same day within 2 minutes of eachother. Come on please, whoever you are, we all now know you are a scammer and not to do any buisness with you. I guess it’s time to use another name and make up another free email. I personally hope that you get caught soon and put in prison for a really long time. You should get a real job and quit takeing these peoples hard earned dollars you lazy piece of S**T. Sorry, but people like that really tick me off. God Bless, and Take Care.
