CRAIGSLIST SCAMS **** PLEASE READ *****
I have been receiving replies to my Craigslist postings, with generic questions or statements in within the email message, such as:
Do you still have?
Still available?
Is price correct?
Send me your phone number.
Is this your item (with a link to another site, which they probably make money off of by re-directing you to that site-or worse, the site contains a Trojan Virus etc.)
Sure, some of these are legitimate, local people that are interested in my items.
However, when I hit the “reply” button, I notice that the reply address is different than the original email address of the sender.
This should be a tip off that they are scamming you for some reason–I imagine it is to get your legitimate email address for future Craigslist scams, or to sell that legitimate email address to a spammer.
Look for misspelled words and for weird names.
The Nigerians have not gotten their American names down perfect.
I received an email from “Cathern Jonse” which probably was suppose to be Catherine Jones.
I just got a response to a CL ad where they wanted my address so they could come look and bring me money. I flagged it with CL, using the link at the bottom of the email response directed through CL.
Just got a message from “Dr. Devin Frank” in responce to the piano lessons post. Im so glad i saw this because i had no idea it could have been a scam, until he sent his second email and i got a little suspicious. He was very rude and outright, saying things like “ok i understand what you are saying but i still need your adress.” He typed in a very neat set up were i could enter my adress and name and even my phone number. He said his daughter “Mary” was young and he needed to know she was safe with us. what a crook. Its disgusting. I hope he dosnt really have a daughter. poor thing.
Why doesn’t CL do something about this? I have reported him, I am sure others have, as well. What good is their link at the bottom of e-mail messages ( report scams) if this guy keeps working it?
Like a few others, I too just got a message from “Dr Devan Frank.” The broken English, shitty grammar, and odd nature of the content made me a bit skeptical so I did some research on the name and ended up here. Here is what he sent me in response to my tutoring ad. Seems like the same thing he’s sent to others…

When I put an ad up on Craigslist, I never intend to sell my stuff long distance so I am immediately wary if there is any mention of distance. Real people always say extremely unique things in unique ways–these scammers just can’t duplicate genuine interest.
This was my most recent. Usually I just delete them, but his first email just said, “do you still have it?” (“it” was a funny word to use when asking about a pair of things btw).

I did deposit the check…I will call the bank that the check was drawn on in the morning to see what they say.
Strange thing…The check was drawn on a bank in PA but sent to me from CA. I am in the process of contacting the person that sent it to me from CA. They may have gotten scammed as well.
I am leaving the check in an account I opened for just this purpose and not doing anything until it either clears or not.
If it is a fraud I will contact the authorities.

So I was sent this same thing. I posted an add about giving private cooking lessons and received a response from Dr. Devan frank. I received the same email as many of you did. He sent me a check for 5000$ and said to deduct my charges and send the rest western union to an address in Texas. Luckily when I got the check I looked into the bank and investment group. Many frauds out of this. The check was real. It sucks that he/she is getting away with this. I’m going to turn it into the FBI and hopefully something can be done.

I have received similar emails although mine originated from M-live instead of craigslist, I had postings for medical equipment. The guys name is “David John”. There is supposed to be payment of some kind delivered on monday and I am supposed to send funds to Richard Klinect who is supposedly a shipper. Needless to say I will be taking all emails and the “check” to the police department instead of the bank.
You know, these guys are such scum! I received a response to a CL ad for an English teacher today from, you know who – Dr. Devan Frank somewhere in the UK. I was so trusting last year that I almost lost $3,000 to a similar scam. By the Grace of God my bank did not penalize me. I’m retired, disabled and live on social security. I add some little money by teaching in my home. But of course these scammers don’t care how much they hurt others. We should ban together and do something!! When I get these responses now I just tell them that I’m flagging their e-mail so don’t bother to respond to me. I have to laugh because for an educated doctor, this Dr. Frank’s English sure is poor.
Seems to me that “Richard Klinect” moves around a lot in Pittsburgh but maybe he took a break for a while. Because I got an address on Stanwix St. My first clue was the 5 differant emails that the man buying the product “Mick Mythrod” was sending me messages from.
Hope they catch them but thinks for info that it took over 2 weeks for them to figure it out, that would explain why they had no problem waiting for the check to clear.
I also got a response from Dr. Devon Frank about tutoring lessons for his daughter. I thought it was fishy!!!
Good to know – I will ignore this from now on. Glad I took the precaution to respond from my backup/alternate email address!
Now I’m just curious why someone would do this type of spam. Will he try to get personal info out of me or something?

The funniest part is when I replied to his email address, it bounced. Hard to run a scam if you can’t even contact them back.

At this point I was seriously weirded out because I had no idea what she was talking about and anything to do with paying for a “shipping fund” was not at all related to subletting an apartment. I haven since received 8 new emails that have increasingly more CAPS LOCKS in them telling me to send a money order to numerous names and addresses:

anyway, haven’t responded in about a week… she actually sent the check, but it made out from “Columbia College Hollywood”, which made no sense whatsoever and I ripped it up.
They aren’t going to get caught because they are very careful about staying elusive. Sending you the fake money order is illegal, but their address and name are fake. When you send the money via the wire services, the recipient can collect it from anywhere on the planet with an ID that shows that it was sent to them. There is no way for the authorities to stake out every “money gram” location and since the money you are sending is quite legal, the wire service is under no obligation to help catch the bad guys.
Keep posting the information whenever you find it. Never forward money for anyone you don’t know. If it’s really an honest mistake then they can send you the correct amount after you return the money order with the error.
Also, they are really good at making the fakes, I have some in my possession, but there is usually a way to check. Your bank manager should be able to tell. Don’t just rely on the teller. They are trained, but people make mistakes when they are in a hurry. Go when the bank is empty, or really slow.
NEVER think that just because the bank takes the check that it is good.
Always wait for the check to clear.
The bank can tell you when it has actually been credited with the amount.
Yes, it can take several weeks. That is what the bad guys are counting on.
No, there is NOTHING you can do about it.

I am so glad I decided to look for information on this, I just got this email from craigslist. This was my interaction with “Diego”. Notice the two different email addresses, one was the initial inquiry the second was in response to telling him the item was still available!

@Desiree, et al. There is no way to catch these guys. I happend to meet with a federal prosecutor the other day (he sold me his bike) and he is actually on a CraigsList scam case right now. We talked about it for a while and basically, they aren’t even in the country. Once someone (the victim) puts money in the Western Union system, the recipient can claim it at ANY Western Union office anywhere on the planet.
His advice, ignore them. Desiree, you will probably recieve threats about the money, etc. Don’t be alarmed. You can either tell them you know they are a scam. (send a link to this page…) or just mark their address as spam and forget about them altogether.
They tried it witih me. The only person to lose money was them for sending that ridiculous looking cheque by Fed Ex. It was pretty obvious the cheque wasn’t real.
My name and address was not an issue for me. Any Moron can look up stuff like that in a phonebook. But I imagine the minute it starts going through my bank account….THAT gives them access to my junk. And THAT was NOT going to happen to me.
I was looking for a roommate to supplement my income due to losing my job recently. I responded to what seemed to be the most normal listing on craigslist. The person claims to be “Linda Paul” a chemist from Leiden University Medical Center who is looking for a place to live while working for the EPA on a private research project. She immediately offered to send me a cashier’s check without even knowing the price of the room. I responded by saying that I wanted to know what office she’s working in and if she has any references before I open my door to a stranger. I also told her that I knew people at the EPA from past work projects and wanted to know who she was working with (which is true). I’ll keep it going for a while and see what happens. Her grammar was horrible! (I keep saying “her” but it was most likely some boy in Pakistan or somewhere.) I should ask if she knows Dr. Walter Smitt or Dr. Devan Frank. hehe. @Tracee. No, you don’t need to send it back. What will happen is they will say that they sent you the money for the shipper (on accident), and to please go to Western Union after you deposit their fraudulant money order and send real money to the shipper so they will come get the bed.
You can just ignore them, or, once you get the check (that’s when you can learn about identifying fake money orders) you can tell them that it’s a fake and that you have reported them to your attorney general’s office.
Tell us what happens, especially if they try a new approach, but I’ll bet I’m really close…

I actually worked at a ISP learned security soon going to finish up at East Stroudsburg University for Computer Security. I just want to share some knowledge. For one when doing business always talk on the phone. Majority of these scanners can’t talk English well enough. Red flags are anything that involves me leaving the country , anything that mentions other countries.
What to do when you think you have a scam artist?
Ok I suggest using your outlook express to open your emails. Why because you can view the headers of the emails. Not all emails on the web will give you detail information of the origin of the emails. For example the avg person has outlook on there pc and don’t use it. But can be used for all your email accounts. Once the account is setup. Simply google your how to setup hotmail in outlook for example. It will show you step by step. Important to get account name right password . Incoming sever and outgoing server right. Once the email is downloaded you can right click on it and view properties or details. It can show you the entire email including headers. What to do. Well a crime can only be followed up if the proper information is gather . And that Alone is plenty if you want to report abuse to your ISP. But you can also look up the Ip address using arin.net . Or a great tool is samspade . Tracert is a command that can be used also to trace back an ip from your to theirs.
My boyfriend and I recently received messages from a DAVID PALMER on 2 separate posts. He offered to pay us more than we asked for, told us not to worry about shipping because he’s taking care of it, said he was sending us a cashiers check and “guaranteed” our security in the transactions. I, not realizing it may have been a scam, gave him my number and he contacted me. I have to say, for having a name like David Palmer he definitely had the oddest accent I’ve ever heard. He said he would keep me updated on the status of the transaction. I haven’t receieved any news from him since.
