Suspected alteration of the Nigerian scam. I responded to a “driver needed” craigslist add. He needed a driver for his wife just for a few days (I was thinking pregnant or from out of town). This is the response e-mail I received two days later:
“Hi There,
Thanks for your response and I am glad to read from you as regard the driving job. My name is fred.I have informed my wife {Her name is {Tina} concerning the pick up and for other purpose which she might need you for. I believe you are fit for this position in as much you will prove yourself as a reliable and good person.Her arrival date is febuary 8th.I will prefer you have your car ready & available,but if you don’t have a car,i will provide a car for you.I am offering you $370 for 3 days & $130 for gas.You will make yourself available 3 times for 5 days to her schedule for 2 hours each day.
Also I want you to know that my client will be sending you money gram money order and the payment will be in excess of $2550. You’re to deduct your pay & the remaining funds will be use by my wife for her travel expenses,accommodations and any other expenses,Get back to me
with the following details of yours

I cannot see how this can possibly be legit. I have not responded yet and if I do I definitely will not be giving out my personal information. I am thinking about having the “money gram” sent somewhere else and then trying to cash it. I am not really sure what I am going to do yet. Any ideas out there?

Except the story of the need for a car driver, this one follows the format of the typical Nigerian scam. Usually, you either have an inheritance or won a lottery of some sort, and then they ask you to respond with your personal info so that they can send you a check (it’s a fake check). Looks like they’re trying to find more creative ways to SCAM people.
They also put ads in craigslist looking for tutors, teachers or babysitters.

I do not know whether to beleive this or not. I certianly will not be sending out personal information, but I would like to e-mail them back with a battery of questions and see if they respond. It looks way to similar to your e-mail to not be a scam. hope this helps someone else too.

It’s a simple scam where they try to convince you to trade your GOOD check for their BAD one. Craigslist has them at least once a week in every major city. You can reply and ask them what city were they looking for a driver and they won’t know. Just mark them as prohibited.
I just received this e-mail from a Craigslist post about driving the wife from the airport. I have requested more info as well as whether I could be paid in any other matter that’s not a mailed money order. We’ll see how they repspond.

there are more diff ways belive me and the number there useing is from http://www.skype.com half the people doing this are right here in the states.i dont know if any of you tryed this but i did what you do just for the hell of it is well if you do when you get to westen union tell them they can only pick up the money right where you want it to go and they have to know a pass word just make one up dont tell the people the mtcn# when they call you of email you i did this just for the hell of it then went back to westen union and got my money back they sent me all kinds of emails begging for the pass word westen union dont care how many i.d’s you have if you dont know the password they will not give anyone the money
This Craigslist posting is all over the place. Just check on different cities and you see almost the identical ad. I don’t understand why Craigslist doesn’t have the ability to block these ads when a scam is pointed out to them. Their “[email protected]” web site is a joke — it says Page Cannot Be Displayed. So much for trying to be a good and watchful citizen.
Well, I fell for it, and cashed the first check (1 out of 3 $825 money grams). I do not know what to do. I really would like to cash the other two, as the first went into my bank account with ease. Now what?

The check is going to bounce. It takes time — which is the window of opportunity that these scammers take to scam you out of your money — after you deposit the money. Did you send them a portion of the money in return? This is often what they ask for. If not… don’t! You will have sent them your real money and you get nothing since the one they gave you was fake. If you have already sent them funds, then you probably won’t see your money again.
Your best bet is to contact your bank about the situation and save all your email communications as evidence. Otherwise, the bank will think you are trying to defraud them for depositing a fake check… and you’ll be in big trouble.

I just received the poorly written scam-mail (see the full letter below). I see these “Need Driver for Wife” ads all over the place on Craig’s List; not just in Transports, but in other categories such as General Labor, ETC. Part Time, etc. There may be a variation on the title such as “Need Experienced Driver-ASAP.” Sometimes you will see “Flagged For Removal” by Craigs, but the scammers seem to be one step ahead and persists on these phony postings. I say “seem” because I’m not certain that Craig’s is all that anxious to get rid of these guys. If this fraud is removed PRIOR to posting then Craig’s makes no money. Since these thieves and jokers are perhaps one of their largest single posters I suspect they are allowed to post for a few days—–collect the fees—then “flagged.” This way Craig’s is able to keep the money. And if some people get burned during those few days, well——tha’ts just too bad.
It’s hard for me to believe that someone could get burned on this particular scam.
The scammers obviously have very little grasp of the English language. They may have heard that North Americans are suckers—–born every minute. The scammers seem to have so much comtempt for us (Americans are REALLY dumb!) that they don’t even bother to hire a English writer to polish their crude and unpolished scam laden letters. Besides language here are some other obviously scam points.
1) They’e willing to forward an excessive check to someone they don’t even know, or have ever interviewed, and without even a back ground check?
2) Why would they send YOU funds to cut a check to HIS wife?!!! Can’t he just say “honey here’s some money. You can can exchange at the airport.” Have you ever sent money to “some guy” on the internet giving him instructions to forward some money to a travel agent who in turn would give money to his spouse—–when that spouse is sitting next to you at this very monment? Remember that “wife” isn’t due to be at the airport until two weeks.
3) Note that this scammer doesn’t ask for your car type or model. Will his wife mind sitting in an unairconditioned jalopy in the middle of summer? He says “if you don’t have a car,i (sic) will rent one from the car rental company.” Why? Don’t you just employ only those who have cars?

4) Based on what they are willing to pay, doesn’t it make more sense NOT to hire anyone——just use the services of a limo driver, or shuttle service, or taxi? As kids say today—“duuuuuuh.” I’ve seen limo drivers in big black Chryslers and Buicks. They wore suits and service caps, and weren’t even driving stretch limos. This seems to make more sense than forwarding money to unknow persons to drive a “wife” around. She can get a taxi, or limo anytime she wants to from licensed persons.
Here is the problem as I see it. I NEVER applied with these scammers. They’re quite easily sniffed out. I applied to (or thought I was applying to) a company called Leaseurope. The job was to move rental cars/truck to various other rental locations. The ad looks quite legit. It is still posted on CL. Go to CL—Texas-Dallas/Ft. Worth—-Transport. The date is Wed. May 27 under ***Drivers***Part Time/Full Time. When I applied I got the scam letter! It looks like these guys are piggy-backing or copying other ads (to look legit). If CL is finally stopping these guys, it appears they may use legitimate companies as a form of phising to get to you, and your e-mail address. They’re still using that bad form letter though.
I just might have a little fun with this. I can give tell them I’m presently employed by the CIA and will be stationed in Nigeria as an “operative.” Or, I’m a get-away-driver for mafia hitmen. My address is at the Grand Canyon.
Apparently these guys are making money. The demographics just don’t seem quite right however. The people they’re trying to hire aren’t going to have a lot of cash in a checking account. In some cases the ONLY money their target is going to have is their phoney money gram. As Bob Dylan once said “when you got nothing, you got nothing to lose.” Most banks put 7-14 day “holds” if the paper doesn’t seem quite right that they’re depositing. I guess however if some guy with $400 in the bank thinks he’s getting $2,000, and he’s quite desparate—–so much so that he can’t even THINK, then he just may cut a check for the “excess.” If this happens to you just say you don’t cut checks for over pays. Tell them “I’ll credit your account for the excess, and will provide you future services the next time your wife is in town” (ha ha). Request that he sues you. Anyway here is the letter I got

That’s the letter I received! Please note that the above is Part II of my comments. I intended to send only one submission, but somehow a portion was inadvertently sent before I was ready.

I went through with one of these scams and even told them NOT to pay me in money orders and they sent 3, for $825.00 each, which were from an Albertson’s grocery store somewhere in Texas. They came UPS overnight, I think now because had they used the post office it would have made the crime federal mail fraud, among other things. I suspected them the minute I saw them. First because I had told them to only send me exactly what they were advancing for “My” payment. And I also told them that it needed to be by certified check that I would require clearance time(10+ days) before we could move forward.
I took the MO’s to my local Albertson’s and showed them to the Customer Service manager and explained my concerns in authenticating them. The next thing you know, there’s two detectives and 3 patrol officers at the counter with me. It seems that the manager didn’t listen to me when I told her I was suspicious and only wanted verification to determine whether or not I needed to take them to the police.
2 hours and a stripped vehicle later, my 65 year old brother and I were allowed to keave the premisis with an apology from the lead uniform for any money that may have been lost. It was not a pretty sight. I would have taken them to the cops first, but I thought there might have been a slim chance they were real, besides the cops had no idea how to authenticate them anyway. I still had the UPS envelope with return address and they took that as well. As it turns out, the manager told the general mgr that we were trying to “pass” the MO’s.
At any rate, there was never any follow up nor did the cop give me a business card. My guess is that I am on somebody’s shitlist somewhere and someday, when it’s most inconvenient and embarrassing, I will find out.
On another note, I just got a reply on another scam, but this one is asking for detailed pics of my vehicle. I am going to take the pics they want, however, it be of a local police car. Guess I just want to get it out of my system…LOL!
I actually got the same kind of thing through craigslist. and responded as well. right now I have a check that they sent me and we’re looking into company that sent us the check. Like Bill i received, what looks like a legit check from a legit company here in California. But the check was sent from Houston, Texas Fedex’d overnight. I’m still holding on to the check and this is what they want me to do.

I’ve talked to the “client” that they supposedly asked them to send money and apparently It’s a legit company but the owners account was stolen. poor guy. and he’s been getting calls from other people who received the same thing.
When you get an email like this..and read about them you should know its “too good to be true” I posted an experience my husband had last year with these scammers and when I cursed them out via email and phone they never responded or called back

The scammer ‘overpays’ you and then asks for you to give him the difference in advance before you cash the fraudulent check. You may even get the check first in order to convince you to give the cash because whoever deposits a fraudulent money order, cashiers check, etc. is the person who is held responsible. He gets your cash and the bank comes after you for cashing the check with fines and the fees. Even if you don’t give over the cash he has nothing to lose. This is always the case and the scam artist tries different variations here and there to disguise the messages better and they always ask for your full name, address, zip, and phone number.
Why the hell would they trust a complete stranger with money and why the hell would anyone over-pay you if they know the exact amount for you to pay the difference? Duh!
I could think of better scams. These ‘artists’ are insulting idiots.
Don’t these guys know that you can take a check to any bank to find out if it is fraudulent or not before depositing it?

I got some versions of this too, and I didn’t even contact anyone for a driver job!!, I’d already anticipated this might happen, so was happy just to reply and tell them to *uck off , *uck the wife, *uck the kids, *uck grandma, ect, ect. Hey I know that’s not nice, but someone has to tell them, if enough people do this it will discourage them and they will have to go find some other victims.
JUST REMEMBER… if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is, and you don’t need to get involved and find out the hard way and end up getting the rip-off.

Thanks for your response. After an extensive background check, I want to say you fit the profile for the driving job. I want you to know that some money will be paid to you via check or money order to cover part of your first week pay, and for the car you will be driving her in.
As soon as you have the funds, you will deduct part of weekly wage and the remaining funds will be sent to the agency responsible for the car through Western Union Money Transfer. Then the car will be sent to you before her arrival.

Well here it is 10-2013 and this scam is still being used. I got similar emails with similar improper English, and similar stupid line. But I had fun with them. Sending them odd responses, short one liners and then asked them for their full name, phone and address……..and they told me job was filled. I told them that was a shame, I was having a lot of fun with them, and by the way they have been tracked, so had better vacate fast, the feds are on the way.

Thanks for your response regarding the driving job. I want you to understand that this is a contract job that will last for 2 weeks. My only daughter is coming over to your area for a seminar and I want you to drive her to the seminar venue throughout her stay. Your driving will be within 2 hrs everyday and for three times in a week making 6 times for the two weeks. I will provide necessary updates about the pick up time with the date and her destination address as soon as we reach a reasonable conclusion about the contract. I believe you are fit for this position in as much you will prove yourself a reliable person.
Her arrival date will be communicated to you later. I would prefer you having your car ready & available, but if you don’t have a car, I would provide a car in order be assured of her convenience. I am offering you $120/hr and additional $20 for gas. You have to make yourself available 3 times a week according to the seminar schedule. You would be driving her for 2 hours everyday which makes $720 in a week plus $20 for the gas. I will greatly appreciate if you would accept this offer and I look forward to your reply also I want you to know that I will be sending you the payment in form of a Company Certified Bank Check.
