I have been looking for work on craigslist now for almost a year now and have had ZERO legit responses. I was about ready to just give up all together on craigslist until I found a service that helped me out tremendously.

http://www.scamtex.com. these guys actually helped cut through the bull sh** postings and let me know if the job I was replying to with my resume was an actual job offer.

Since using this service I have felt much more comfortable in replying to job offers and now the replies I am getting are from ACTUAL businesses that have a REAL job to offer.

I would suggest using this service to search any and all classified postings.

  2. rachel says:

is this a scam?? i was just searching through the internet for this “Junior Field” to get an idea of their family, because i too responded to the ad. i was somewhat suspicious if it was false or not. and i recieved the exact same email that you did, just my name was put in there instead of yours.
im not disagreeing with you at all, but how could you tell this was a scam right away? and how are they trying to scam us? just so i know what to look out for..

  3. Jeremy says:

I have used craigslist for over a year now trying to land a job, (ANY
JOB) I have not had one legit response to any of my replies. I have
only had auto responders for more ads and offers or NOTHING in return,
    not even a NOT HIRING…..

I started using the http://www.scamtex.com service and have not
received one bad reply yet. These guys investigate the posting for me
before I submit my personal information and resume. The guys at
http://www.scamtex.com have made this job hunting so much safer and
easier. Now I do not waist my time replying to scam postings.

Everyone should at least check them out. Would you stand on the street
corner and hand out your resume to a stranger? NO? then why would you
    do it on craigslist?

    THIS IS A SCAM!!
It’s so sad because I didn’t find out until it was ALMOST too late.

I responded to a post from a Cathy Janis. The want your address so they can send you a check two weeks in advance to “secure your services” The checks are fake and if you cash them into your own bank they will bounce and you will owe the bank the balance if it is more than you had in your account.

I sent my address to these criminals a day ago, then I Googled “Craigslist check Scams” and “craigslist housekeeper scams”

I’m glad I found out before I tried to cash the bogus check they’re going to send!

    Sincerely,

I thought I’d run a check on HIM if he was going to run one on me.(that’s only fair, right?) I cut and pasted the whole first paragraph into my google search bar and came up with THIS web site……I think I’ll pass on this offer…….I found this add was placed in an Arizona Craigslist as well as bakersfield, CA.

  8. Ruchala says:

I also responded to this email, not knowing it was fake. He sent me a check for a really large amount and I felt weird about it so I had the bank check them before putting them in my bank. The only difference with my email is that he told me he was arriving the 6th not the 13th. So glad I realized it before anything happened. Though I’m still not sure what he was trying to accomplish.

  9. B.S. True says:

Tijannia, I think the possibility of a scam comes from this paragraph,

“Our expected arrival date is 6th of February but you will be paid beginning immediately, as i will have several small assignments for you to complete prior to our arrival, such as checking our new apartment for necessary supplies, purchasing what may be needed before our arrival, etc.”
Did he send you a check for more than the $300 he first mentioned? I think he would then instruct you to purchase certain items”for their arrival” and either have you send them or leave them somewhere that his “assistant” would recover them. Then when the check didn’t clear, YOU would be responsible for the $.

It’s really too bad, I too would love to have a shot at a job with those benefits. I guess that’s how they find so many people to respond to their ad.

Imagine if they could send you a check and then ask you if you would go and purchase them a laptop or I-pad and have you meet their assistant to drop it off.
Then, you don’t hear from them for a week, 2 weeks, etc… Then your Bank calls and tells you that the check you deposited/cashed was no good, and you have to give the $ back!

15 yrs ago they would have got me, but with the internet, we are able to look this up and prevent a disaster. Remember, you can google/search ANYTHING.
I have replaced a car’s thermostat, fixed a bad element on a dryer, learned how to knit, all with step by step instructions and/or videos(on youtube) to show me the way.
Right now I’m in the process of learning how to start a small business.

Don’t let this little situation get you down, learn from it, and get out there and learn what you need to do to be successful! Start your own homecare or childcare business. Maybe a cleaning business or a sewing/alteration business.
    YOU CAN DO IT!
    Good luck sister….

Here is the email I got when I applied to a job on Sittercity, and after corresponding a few times, she sent picture of “her family” to really try to make it look legit, SO BEWARE PEOPLE!

    Hi Dear,
Am glad you wrote back so sorry it took me so long to get back to you been having internet problems, Am not sure how best to go about this nanny choosing, as you should understand that a child is not what you just leave in the care of anyone as there has to be trust and love as very good parent would give to a child. I did lose my mom about a two weeks ago and only had her funeral some days back here in England and we should be back in states in a week from now, hence, we have been for a look out for a nanny even before the death of mom. This is the email I received after emailing my resume….I know this is a scam due to the fact that had they paid attention to the name on the email & the name on the header of my resume are different. I did this just to see if they would catch it and mention it when they wrote back. I mean if you seen 2 different names even if they’re just spelled differently but the same name, wouldn’t u want to know why the person wanting to watch your children don’t even know which way to spell their name? I certainly wouldn’t,much less respond with what they did. This guy went as far as even calling me but made sure he didn’t stay on the phone over like 2min, called from a blocked #, then when i asked him to have his wife contact me he said he’d have her call later cuz he wasn’t at home right now. Now, as a mother, MOST GOOD PARENTS, want to MEET the person they’re entrusting their childs life with.
    Here’s what it said…..

After he sent me this I told him I wouldn’t send any of the information he was requesting till I have a verified number I could reach him@and his wife had contacted me as well. I never heard from him again but kept the emails for all of them. I’d say about 80% of these types of ads are fraud because it doesn’t matter how much information they ask for, I care if they don’t even MENTION keeping in contact other then thru mail… I didn’t change nething else tho on the resume so I hope nothing happens2all my stored my personal shit…guess my next project is saving everything to my computer just in case the have a key logger program that runs in the background while its loading. DO NOT TRUST THEM! Not only that, I told him2call me so I’d have HIS contact info but I sent him mine.
For those of u that can, make sure you put the max security on ur emails, like site keys or additional login info that sends alerts2ur phone or email when sum1 has accessed ur acct thru another terminal then the one set to be primary.

I am so glad to have found this information. Our daughter, away at college, just received the check from these people. We’ve been battling with her about our uncertainty with this offer. She’s a smart girl and eager to make money and be independent so it frustratred her to that we expressed doubts. I’m not glad to be right but thankful that we prevented this from going any further. We could not figure out how this would go wrong but were 99% certain it would. Now we know. Thank you all.

  15. Anonymous says:

I too was almost pulled in by this fraud. The minute they told me $500 a week for 15 hours I became suspicious.

From what I understand from reading this web page, they give you the check, it is fake, you try and use that money, check bounces, and all of a sudden you owe the bank a lot of money.

BUT! What I don’t understand is what they are getting out of this?

    What am I missing?
    Someone please explain?

I recently responded to a similar ad on craigslist. he said he was relocating from th UK to work for the EPA in louisiana. He sent me pictures of the family and seemed really legit until I got the check in the mail and it was mailed from georgia and the check was from a software company in california. His name was Nelson Fletcher in the emails but it was mailed from a man named Allen Mark. I havent cashed the check. http://www.hoax-slayer.com/baby-sitting-overpayment-scam.shtml this is the website that clued me into what was going on. I really hate that there are so many people that will prey on good hard working people just because they need a job in this horrible economy.

  17. Rachel says:

Unfortunately, I too have fallen for this scam. Luckily no check has been sent to me. It’s a shame because I am a college student looking for part time work over the summer. Now I regret ever using craigslist to find a job. My boyfriend smelled a rat ever since the woman offered me money up front without ever meeting me or at least talking to me over the phone. Oh well. I guess the saying, If it looks too good to be true then its probably is, is indeed true. Here is what the woman/man whoever it may be sent me. I hope to pass the word along to prevent this from happening to anyone else.

    Good Morning Rachel,

How are you doing today? Hope you’re doing good! Am really sorry for my late response, I have spoken with the member of my family regarding your position in the house and it all went well. Am sure you will glad working with us, we will be arriving on the 5th June and im sure you will be available then? I’ve forwarded your information to my finance manager and I will let you know with the tracking number of the payment as soon as the payment is mailed out to you.

I’ll like you to keep eye on the payment and check your email everyday for tracking number of the payment. I will instruct my landlord to mail the keys and the full description to the apartment to you as soon as the renovation work is completed so that you can do all other necessary preparations before we arrive. Am sure the renovation would be completed this friday and keys and paperwork would be sent to you immediately okay!

Please, kindly get back to me with those 3 days you will be available, morning or afternoon any is good. I’ll really need your commitment and honesty. Your responsibilities includes: mopping, sweeping, vacuuming, making beds, dusting, cleaning toilets, sinks, bathtubs and run errands .

I’ve attached pictures with this email and i’ll also like to view yours as well. We can’t wait to meet you.

Hope to read from you soon. Thank you and have a wonderful day.

    Regards

I almost took a scam craigslist job from Michael Eratus, and I’m a little sad to find out that it couldn’t be real because it looks exactly like the other scams out there. I got a little nervous that he said he was from London, England but his grammar and sentence structure were both awful. He also would capitalize random things. He also would not reply to questions I had for him or anything else I said to him in my emails. Also, the terms “lodging” and “your area” pop up over and over which are strange in this context… here are his emails.

Hello, this email serve’s as an acknowledgement for your resume. Your resume as been received and will be reviewed.
My name is Micheal Eratus, I am the head civil engineer with Shimmick Construction and Renovation Co.. London England…I just went through your resume as a good caregiver for infants. Hence I would want to leave my 3 year old daughter Juliana in your care everyday as I would accompany 3 other delegates for an inspection tour of one of our Building project located near you in the United States. The inspection tour implies that I leave my hotel some few hours every day to the Building site and back home, this would make it difficult to take care of my kid; this tour would stretch from the 21th of june. through 21th of july.

I need someone who can do 5 hours a day Monday – Friday.

I would like to know your number of times and hours of availability weekly basis as soon as we arrive. So I can schedule my appointment of leaving home daily…
I’m offering $30 an hour plus gas / negotiable, as I would want all condition conducive for both you and Juliana while in your care.

Juliana is adorable and gets along easily with people, never allergic and sleeps a lot, I would be sending you her PICTURE as soon as I get a reply from you indicating your readiness to care for her everyday before I return.

    Thanks .
    Micheal. E

    ALSO

Thanks for resolving my situation to baby-sit Juliana. How is your week going?I am coming to huston texas,I have attached Her pictures here with. You would be babysitting in a nearby hotel around your location.I would forward the address to you in due time. But if you do not feel comfortable at the hotel I would be lodging then your home would be perfect.

OMGGG i know! I got an email from a “Henry Rodriquez” from the UK SAME exact email…I cant believe someone out there is doing this to so many people and i cant believe Ifell for this shit and gave them my email…thank God for my dad who searched for these people and found out about everyone else who was being scammed the same exact way as I was. I hate these people and they need to be stopped! Im just glad I didnt cash the check yet, although we were going to go to the bank he made the check out for, not my account, because we had a pretty good idea it was fake..i mean, who sends a 17 year old girl he doesn’t even know $2,755 dollars? I just wish we could let more people know…

Thanks for letting me know about this. I gave out my full name and cell #, but luckily I didn’t give away any more info. I am so glad I found out before it was too late. Here’s what happened to me:

I understand you need an answer right away, but I am not clear on what is going to happen. I did not know you were out of the country and I honestly don’t feel very comfortable working for you if we haven’t conducted a proper interview first. We have not met in person yet, and I due to internet safety percautions I take, I am not allowed to accept this job until I have met the family at least once in person. I don’t feel comfortable sharing too much personal information without having met you yet. I really hope you understand my concern.

He is 2 years of age, has no allergies and likes playing around with puppies and cat, likes other kids as well watching cartoons and other nice things which is always fun for him and i think you would love to have him around as he’s playful and fun loving. My son is not allergic to any food as he loves taking snack, chocolates and juice and ice cream but vanilla flavor.

I know you are being paid for this but to me is a favor you are doing me by wanting to take care of him and showing him care, love and happiness as i don’t want him to lack all. As I’ve explained to you earlier in my previous email he means everything to me, I want you to know that i have reviewed your proposal and re-read your application sent to me, and to be honest am highly impressed. And i want you to know that am hiring you right away, which the payment will start by this week, As i have checked my schedule i may not be around this Month, but i will be preparing your payment and will mail the payment as a check to you. As i will be trusting you with my son, first i will need you to do just this for him first, the payment I will be sending you will including the other bills and other necessary things my son may be needing, so once you have the payment cashed, you will deduct your money for one week and later send the difference/balance to my neighbor who will be taking care of him later in the day while you are gone,it will be for his welfare till i am back from Scotland.I believe i can trust you in getting this done. I will be waiting to read from you with a go ahead so as to be able to issue the payment you.

    If so i will require the following details below from you once again ;

    (1) (Check Payable name) Your full names:
    (2) Contact address:…not P.O.Bx
    (3) Telephone/cell numbers:

Thank you for getting back to me , My name is Steven Lloyd, I’m Originally from Dallas, right now i will be very busy with my seminar/workshop that is why i need a nanny for my son, as explained in my ad I need a nanny for my Son, his name is Josh and he is 2 yrs old, he is well behaved ,you will be taking care of him between the hours of 1pm – 4pm daily at your place, we may not be able to meet in person, because I’m a very busy person and still busy with the works in front of me right now, but once we agree on terms and condition and once we are done with the payment part, my neighbor would be the one who will be bringing him to the location which we will agree on together,She would be the one taking care of his well being till i get back home. And as speculated , i would only be able to pay $80 per day, And i would be paying equivalent of $400 per week, email me to let me know when you would be available to start, so i can be able to check with my neighbor, and will be able to know how to prepare your first week payment so you can be able to start as soon as I’m through with the payment. And please do not hesitate to tell me a little more about yourself and your experience. let me know if your okay with my condition, After a month i will know if you will continue taking care of him or not, which will depends on your relationship with my son.

I will be able to pay for 5 days a week and I have nothing to worry about since the neighbor would be taking good care of him for me during after hours, but Please you still will have to guarantee me of taking proper care of my boy. And let me know what hours you will be free .If you are interested in the position, I will like you to send me an email with a brief summary of your nanny experience or your resume. As well as some references if any.I also have a small interview for you if you are interested in the position. It is stated below:

    1)What are your academics qualifications?
2)Do you have certificate to back up your Tutoring?
    3)How old are you?
    4)Are you married?
    5)Do you have kid(s)?
6)Do you have any criminal records?
I want you to send me your full name and your contact address, and your phone number.

WOW so thankful I’m a suspicious twentysomething and stumbled upon this thread before it went too far! I thought it seemed fishy and too good to be true…here’s mine. Exactly the same as the last post, but with a different name…

Hello, this email serve’s as an acknowledgement for your resume. Your resume as been received and will be reviewed.
My name is benny burns, I am the head civil engineer with Shimmick Construction and Renovation Co.. London England…I just went through your resume as a good caregiver for infants. Hence I would want to leave my 3 year old daughter Juliana in your care everyday as I would accompany 3 other delegates for an inspection tour of one of our Building project located near you in the United States. The inspection tour implies that I leave my hotel some few hours every day to the Building site and back home, this would make it difficult to take care of my kid; this tour would stretch from the 30th of june. through 30th of july.

I need someone who can do 5 hours a day Monday – Friday.
I would like to know your number of times and hours of availability weekly basis as soon as we arrive. So I can schedule my appointment of leaving home daily…
I’m offering $50 an hour plus gas / negotiable, as I would want all condition conducive for both you and Juliana while in your care.
Juliana is adorable and gets along easily with people, never allergic and sleeps a lot, I would be sending you her PICTURE as soon as I get a reply from you indicating your readiness to care for her everyday before I return.

    Thanks .

I have seen this add posted many times since my first response to it.
    Here is what I do now when I see one of these on Craigslist;
FLAG IT. Then it is removed (if only temporarily) and they have to go to the trouble of reposting. This scam comes in many versions, but generally it’s a job offer of some kind, where you get paid ALOT more than you could normally make for an unskilled job with pretty much no experience. It’s usually in the area of $300-$400 bucks a week or more to do something like nanny or drive as a chauffeur or assist someone, for only 10-25 hours a week. BEWARE, the scammers are making THEIR money the easy way, but it’s illegal. We have to WORK for our pay, so don’t get greedy and fall for their schemes.

  23. Nicole says:

This scam is also on craigslist Chicago…seemed suspicious. I searched for Shimmick Construction and Renovation Co which of course doesn’t exist. Good luck finding a job folks!

If you accept this position, I will instruct my financier Assistant to forward to you a check for your first week upfront payment either by  FedEx or USPS so that i can be rest assured of your availability for the job and  i wouldn’t need to be searching for a nanny anymore. I will as well run a background check on you because it’s not easy to leave a child with someone just like that and i hope you understand my concerns.

So glad I found this site I received another today saying I would receive a check.

    Dear Worker,

How are you doing today? I want to use this opportunity to inform you that my financier will be mailing you a check payment soon, finally it will get delivered to your door step on or before 9th of July 2011. Once you received the check, firstly deduct your first week payment which is $400 then the rest of the fund which supposed to be budget for the Foodstuffs and other things that will be needed in our Apartment should be pend for now. The reason for this is that we are still going to balance our Traveling Agent in order to accomplished all necessary documents that are needed to back up our traveling down to United State.

Having deducted $400 your own first week Nanny service charges, then you will send the rest of the fund to the traveling agent via western union transfer Agent around you. I hope you have a Western Union agent close to you where you can execute the Western Union Transfer to the Traveling Agent so he can be able to Ship us all the Documents that will back up our Traveling from Scotland down to United State. If you can be able to complete this assignment for me and my wife i will compensate you an extra amount of $100 for rendering your Assistant for me, my wife and my children. I should have the fund across to the traveling agent myself but i run out fund here.

I hope i can trust and count on you with the money you are sending to the agent for our Traveling Documents? And i will be looking forward to see you on our arrival. I hope when my wife and children arrive they will be in good hands.

Thank you and God bless. Soon i will email you the USPS OR FEDEX Tracking number of the payment package as soon as the check payment have been written and mail out to you by the Financier. I will email you the Tracking number of the payment package for you to know the exact delivery date of the check Payment. I will do this once the Financier have sent me the Tracking Number information.

Finally, do not forget that our arrival date is 13Th of July, 2011. As you can see is getting much closer to us. Please get back to me once you received this message.

I sent my resume to these schmucks!!! it has my name, phone number, address, my last 5 jobs, and my references’ phone numbers!!!! I’m so mad!! He went by Kelly Richardson, he gave me the same crud with London and Shimmick Construction and his daughter Juliana and whatnot, no answers to any of my questions just a bunch of shady weirdness offering more money than usual…I’m going back onto Craigslist and I’m FLAGGING this job post! It’s real unfortunate because the initial add seemed legitimate (it was for a set of TWINS) until I got this weirdo email (specifying ONE single daughter). I guess it goes to show, you should NEVER apply for a nanny or sitter job on Craigslist 🙁

Funny thing is, they also mentioned something about speaking good enough English in the initial add on Craigslist, I suppose my English expertise on my resume and my indication of such in my email made these suckers extra careful. And too bad I’m smart enough to realize if you were even that well-off to pay that much for care services, you’d probably pay an actual professional certified to even charge that much to care for the Alzheimer’s patient instead of cooping your kid up with some random American for a month.

This is the email I received from Mr. “Kelly Richardson”:

    Kelly Richardson
    To Allyssa T*****
    Hello,

Thanks for replying back to my online job posting. This email serves as an acknowledgement of your response to the job posted on craigslist. My name is Kelly Richardson. I am the head civil engineer with Shimmick Construction and Renovation Co located in London, United Kingdom. I will be coming over to the US on official assignment with my daugther. My daughter would have stayed back in the UK with my wife but my father in-law is sick with mild alzheimer’s disease and my wife is the one looking after my father in-law at the hospital. So my wife wont have much time to take good care of our daughter because of her dad’s illness.

I will be coming over to the US with my daughter and I want to leave her in your care everyday as I will accompany 3 other delegates for an inspection tour to one of our buildings project located near you in the United States. My daughter’s name is Juliana and she is 3 years old. The inspection tour implies that I leave my hotel for few hours every day to the building site and back to the hotel. This would make it difficult to take care of my kid. This tour would stretch from July 25th, 2011 through August 19th, 2011.

I need someone who can do 8 to 10 hours per day Monday through Friday.

I will like to know your number of times and hours of availability weekly basis as soon as we arrive. So I can schedule my appointment of leaving the hotel daily.
I’m offering $20 an hour plus gas / negotiable, as I would want all conditions conducive for both you and Juliana while she is in your care.

Juliana is adorable and gets along easily with people, never allergic and sleeps a lot. I will be expecting your response as soon as possible indicating your readiness to care of Juliana everyday before I return back to the hotel.

    Regards,
    Kelly Richardson

    Celina, Your’s is a very valuable post! Earlier in this thread people were wondering how this guy makes money off of you if he’s the one sending the checks. Well here it is, plain as day, he writes;

“Having deducted $400 your own first week Nanny service charges, then you will send the rest of the fund to the traveling agent via western union transfer Agent around you. ”

There, that’s how he scams you. You cash the (phoney) check, send HIM (not a traveling agent) $$ by western union, (notice HE isn’t using Western Union to send YOU your check because you have to pony up the cash to Western Union like for a cashiers check). Then the check you cashed originally, bounces and you get a call from your bank demanding ALL the $$ back. You are the one who has to return the cash, even though you sent a bunch of it to that scum.

THE BEST THING YOU CAN DO WHEN YOU SEE AN ADD LIKE THIS IS FLAGG IT, SO IT GETS REMOVED IMMEDIATELY FROM CRAIGSLIST!

  33. Lol@This says:

I didn’t even send a resume! I knew it was a scam, I was just bored but seriously what is it that they get from sending checks that don’t cash???

  34. B.S.True says:

Lol@, The problem is, your bank probably would cash the check, you’d get the $ and then you would be asked to send some of it back to his “travel agent” using western union. BUT, in a week or so after cashing the check, YOUR BANK would get stiffed when they try to collect their $ from the other (fake) bank that wrote it.
Guess who is responsible to reimburse your bank? Yes, YOU. If you still have some of the $ you can return it, but what about the part of the $ you wired to the “traveling agent”? Banks look at this as a crime, and YOU are the one who cashed the check! Some banks will even press charges against YOU!

Read Celina’s post above from June 29th, It is a copy of the last response she got from the scammer. You’ll see the con men don’t put themselves in any danger of either being caught or losing any $.

THE BEST THING YOU CAN DO IS FLAG THIS WHENEVER YOU SEE IT ON CRAIGSLIST. This removes it for awhile until they can get another account to post it with.

My daughter would have stayed back in the UK with my wife but my father in-law is sick with mild alzheimer’s disease and my wife is the one looking after my father in-law at the hospital. Juliana is adorable and gets along easily with people, never allergic and sleeps a lot. I will be expecting your response as soon as possible indicating your readiness to care of Juliana everyday before I return back to the hotel.

I have been looking for work ever since moving back to California and came across a nanny position posted by [email protected] on Cragislist…the email i received back was almost similar to the ones everyone is posting…and I’m a bit scared. I am a bit young and have kind of thought that it might be too good to be true. So, today I googled his email address and found lots of nanny postings in different areas around California. I feel saddened and very naive for believing that it was real. I guess I should thank this posting. Things could have gone extremely bad and I thank you.

Okay, so these people are still at it. I received two responses. One from “Sharon Carter”, and one from “Michael Hamilton”. Same basic premise, out of the country, will sent check before you start working, well above average pay scale. Horrible grammar and spelling, random capitalization. This is what got me suspicious enough to check up on it: Michael Hamilton spelled his own name wrong in his email header. I am not sure what it is that these people are hoping to gain, but it angers me that they are putting so much time and effort into scamming folks who obviously need work. Just wanted to make known two more aliases and the fact that Sharon Cater wanted to run a back ground check. PLEASE! Dont give these people anything but a good thrashing!

  45. BSTrue says:

The best thing to do when you find these scams on CL is flag-flag-flag! It takes them off the board for a while and keeps their potential victims from seeing the ad.

Remember that the money order they will send is really just a bad check that WILL bounce, and when it does, YOU are liable to repay YOUR bank for ALL the funds, even though the scammer has you send part or most of it back to them via Western Union.

OMG I just got this EXACT e-mail response back from this woman this morning! It sounded so formal in the beginning, and if she was a mother looking for a caregiver for her child I would absolutely expect a request for a a background check for someone she doesn’t even know!!! That’s what made me question whether or not the listing was legit at all.

If “Robert & Lori Johnson” are sending me a cheque for $400 but they don’t require me to purchase anything or forward any funds then where w/in the scam is the scamm-er benefiting?!? I cannot for the life of me think what these people could be gaining…..money from someone else (on up the pyramid) to continue posting false ads?
