Rev. James Gomes (probably a fake name) responds to furniture advertisements on Craigslist, then sends a check with an overpayment. He then instructs the seller to send the remaining money (usually $2000) back via MoneyGram. The check is fake, and the scammer disappears. He uses the email jamesgomes2@hotmail.com.

This is totally true, he just did this exact thing to me for $1500. Then he threatened to call the police when I didn’t give him the money. I told him to go ahead and call them.
What should I do to report him? I already reported him to abuse@craigslist.org

He just emailed me and asked for a picture and the price of the furniture I had listed, each of which is already in the listing. But he used a gmail address this time. I deleted his email and googled, and I found this page. Sellers beware!
OMG! OMG! This man has just scammed me! I started getting panicky when he did not respond to my last e-mail. I also googled him and found this page. I am not going to accept anything that is delivered to my home UPS and what really angers me is that I needed the money to help me move at the end of the week. His new e-mail is James5q@btopenworld.com. I am now going to report himas well.
I just got an email from him too responding to my ad on craigslist but it sounded fishy and luckily I found this page before the transaction went any further! The email address he emailed me from was jamesgomes0@gmail.com.
I just got a sketchy e-mail from Rev. James in response to a craigslist post. Good thing I googled him before responding. The e-mail he was using was James13f@btopenworld.com, but the reply-to e-mail is jamesgomes0@gmail.com. If there’s anything else we can do to report him, let me know.
He just emailed me too about some furniture. He also uses email address James13e11e@btopenworld.com And jamesgomes0@gmail.com. Jerk.
This man contacted me via email through Craigs list and his email was rather confusing. He didn’t specify what item he was interested in. I told him that I had a few items for sale and asked which one he was referring to. He ten sent me the same confusing email from another email address. Again, I asked what he wanted info on and he emailed me saying that he was hearing impaired and that email was his only means of communication. He then asked me to send him my address, phone # ect. and his associate would send a check. That email came from a third email address. Sounded fishy, so I googled his name and here we are. He uses Jamesfr1fsww1@btopen, jamesgomes0@gmail.com and james1w11@btopenwor. I’m sure he has others too by looking at the other reports. I just emailed him telling him “NICE TRY” Careful, there are all kinds out there.
Have to laugh out loud. The same thing has happened to me. He sent an email asking for very specific information and saying a certified check would be coming and that movers would be coming to take my furniture. I felt very uncomfortable so said I would continue to try and sell the pool table I had listed. I did just that, the next day. I emailed and said do not send a check. He sent back that the check is already on the way and I owe him money now.
Well, Rev. James Gomes just tried to get my name, address and phone# as I had some furniture listed on Craigs List and he said he was interested.. I got suspicious as to why he needed this info and typed his name in Google search and found this! Hmmm….glad I got suspicious!
OMG !! He just tried to get me, thank goodness I found this site. The e-mail sounded strange, the words did not go together.

The scammer is trying to get me for a $75 coffee table. I told “him” that its cash upfront only.

Laura seems to write with the same poor English that the Reverend does. I got the exact same e-mail as Michael did. I look forward to the check that I will get – may even frame it.
Also using Rev James Bishop and 3 different email addresses (one of which is not listed above. He is a pushy scammer too – I sent him quite a few emails saying that I would only accept his payment via paypal.com and he was incredibly insistent that I accept his “wire transfer”. Crazy! Should I worry about him having my email address? So glad that I went with my gut on this one!

His secretary already put the check in the mail, and mistakenly made it out for $1075, instead of $75. I will probably frame it (unless I cash it, deduct my $75 plus $50 for my trouble, and send the rest to his wife).

revjamesbishop@btinternet.com is scamming claiming to hire you as a mystery shopper. He sends a cheque for you to cash, make a retail purchase then test either Western Union or MoneyGram to send the money to 43 Louis St, Apt F, Chelsea (Boston) MA attention Regina Noles. He claims to represent Tommerset Textiles Ltd. but the company address is actually Vancouver City Hall, BC. Of course the cheques are no good. Another email address is tommerset.textiles1@earthlink. He has put job postings on dozens of free job sites all over Canada to hire mystery shoppers.

I just signed up for the mystery shopper thing and apparently its the infamous rev. James Bishop that your all talking about. So far I think that he tries to build up your faith by sending you a legitimate cheque the first round then the last cheque I recieved was followed by an e-mail that said to cash the cheque for $2,500, keep $300 for myself and send the rest though Western Union to a Dianne Gmomes. I contacted Phonebusters and am awaiting a response as to what I should do. Beware folks!

I got the same mystery shoppers thing he’s sending around and I actually wrote him back a few emails. I feel stupid that I had given my address in the first place. This morning he send a check of 940 through UPS. and Now I don’t know what to do.
I was debating if i should go and show the check to my Bank and tell them the story or what. I don’t know how or who I should report this to.
at first he used the email, revjamesbishop@binternet.com. but I noticed in the emails he sent me this morning he used a different email (nicejanto1@btinternet.com) , that’s why I start thinking things are weird, plus the fact that the check was emailed to me so fast, was kind of phishing.
I am leaving in Montreal. the only reason I figured it was realistic was because I searched the company and noticed the job adds as well.
anybody with ideas please help.
Stella, I suggest you report it to the authorities in your area as well bring the check he sent to you to the bank you deal with so that they can also launch an investigation. All major banks discuss scams with other banks so that they can be on the watch for people like this Rev James Bishop/Rev James Gomes. I wasn’t afraid to tell this person that the e-mails he sent me have now been forwarded to police; I hope we can stop this person before he ends up making problems for someone who seriously wants work. I was sent a check for $1850 this morning as well; I am taking that check to my bank this morning so that they can have his information on file and report it to other major banking institutions in Canada. my mother was “hired” to be a mystery shopper by this guy. the minute she told me, i had that gut feeling that something was wrong. when we got this “packege” we didnt even get instructions or a training booklet, we just got the check.
were about to take this to the police to see what we should do and we printed out all the info at my work and were bringing every bit of info to them.
hopefully this piece of…. will be caught. noone deserves to be scammed like this.

He sent me the same secret shopper message and sent out a check ups. I had asked him when i noticed he changed his name and email on the last address. He said he was working for the other guy. The check looked fake so i called BC about it, They said it was fradulant. I then took the cheque to the bank and they said the same thing, He didnt even sign it. when i told him they wouldnt take it because it wasnt signed he told me to just sign the company name and the bank would take it. I asked if he wanted it back and he got nasty . so i asked if he wanted me to take it to the cops. no response.
now I have another name to report. John Bull. And I swear to god that If you ever use Rev. Again I will request my father and lord that you be punish the the man himself in the after life.

This guy emailed me about a cell phone I have for sale. I had a weird feeling for some reason about this guy so I decided to check him out and found this web page. The email he have me was nicejanto1@btinternet.com and he’s now using the alias “Evang. Brandon Kerry”. I guess I thought it was weird that some evangelist would be interested in purchasing a cell phone off of craigslist. That and my motto has always been “trust no one and question everything”.
I have my bike for sale on craigslist. I got a response from linda.gwoodrwidgse1@earthlink.net initially and later with the email id nicejanto1@btinternet.com. He is currently using the name Evang. Brandon Kerry. He just sent me an email saying he posted me a check with excess amount and asked me to return the remaining amount. I somehow suspected it and googled and I came to this page. Thankfully I found he is a scamster.
This guy is a total scammer!!! He sent me an email regarding my 2 cell phones that im selling on craig list and he was sounding all weird and fishy. i thought it was real so i gave hime my address and now i got a check for 12,500. Im reporting the check to my bank and to the police hopefully they catch this guy. Here are some of the emails he sents.

I will like to informed you that I contacted my secretary to confirm if your payment has been mailed out, I was made to understand that instead of the actual amount for the item, The bank made out check for $1,250 The payment was already posted before I was informed about this but is a little problem which we can handle with care.
I wouldn’t want this to delay the sale, As I have rectify this with my Bank and all you do once you have the payment is to take it to your Bank and have it deposited once it clear you will then deduct the money for your goods plus a $50 (the cost of running around).
The excess fund on the payment will then be wired to my wife via Money Gram that same day it clears so that she can give it to my mover to come for the pick up as I already plan on using the excess on the payment to offset the cost of the previous shipments she has undertaken on my behalf. I’ll really appreciate this from you because been honest is the best in life so do let me know if I can trust you to have the excess fund sent to my wife so we can proceed further, More so bout the pickup all I just need from you is the nearest airport to your location. ..
